One of the biggest 'enemies' of a fly line is dirt and grit.  When fly fishing, your line is usually at your feet where it picks up all the dirt and grit from the bankside.  Add to this getting stood one (which usually happens) and that grit and dirt ends up getting embedded into your line.  The end result is a fly line that doesn't cast properly or smoothly and, if it's a floating line, one that usually ends up sinking!!

The basket fastens around your waist and as you strip the line in it collects in the basket, away from all the dirt and grit.  The base of the tray is mesh so the water just drains out.  When you come to recast, the line is all neatly gathered in the tray (not tangled around bankside foliage or your feet) and casts out without hindrance.
